Francesco Bullo is a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He received his Laurea degree “summa cum laude” in Electrical Engineering from the University of Padova, Italy, in 1994 and his Ph.D. degree in Control and Dynamical Systems from the California Institute of Technology in 1999. From 1998 to 2004, he was an Assistant Professor at the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Since joining UCSB in 2004, Bullo has been affiliated with multiple departments and research centers.
Professor Bullo’s research focuses on modeling, dynamics, and control of multi-agent network systems, particularly applied to robotic coordination, power systems, distributed computing, and social networks. His previous work includes contributions to geometric control theory, Lagrangian systems analysis, vehicle routing problems, and motion planning algorithms. He has published over 270 articles in international journals, books, and conferences.
Professor Bullo is the co-author of several influential books: Geometric Control of Mechanical Systems (Springer, 2004), with Andrew D. Lewis; Distributed Control of Robotic Networks (Princeton University Press, 2009); and “Lectures on Robotics Planning and Kinematics” (SIAM, under review in 2016). His book titled Lectures on Network Systems, published by CreateSpace in 2018, is available for download from his website.
Professor Bullo has been recognized with numerous awards including Fellow of IEEE and IFAC. He currently serves as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Control Systems Society and received the 2018 Distinguished Scientist Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research papers have won several prestigious prizes, such as CSM Outstanding Paper Award (IEEE CSS, 2008), Hugo Schuck Best Paper Award (AACC, 2011), SIAG/CST Best Paper Prize (SIAM, 2013), Automatica Best Paper Prize (IFAC, 2014), Guillemin-Cauer Best Paper Award (IEEE CAS, 2016) and TCNS Outstanding Paper Award (IEEE CSS, 2016).
Professor Bullo has supervised or co-supervised over twenty PhD students who have received awards for their work at major conferences. He was awarded the UCSB Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award in 2015 and the UIUC COE Outstanding Advisor Award in 2004.
In addition to his research and teaching, Professor Bullo has served on various committees of the IEEE Control Systems Society since 2007, including Vice-President for Technical Activities (2011-2012), Vice-President for Publications (2013-2014) and Program Chair at the 2016 IEEE Conference in Decision and Control. He is set to serve as President Elect / President / Past President of the society from 2017 through 2019.
Furthermore, Professor Bullo has been a member on several editorial boards including IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, “ESAIM: Control, Optimization, and Calculus of Variations,” “SIAM Journal of Control and Optimization” as well as “Mathematics of Control, Signals and Systems.”
From July 2013 to June 2017, Professor Bullo served as the Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department at UCSB. In this position, he managed academic personnel matters, educational programs, facilities management, governance issues, finances, communication strategies and development initiatives.
