The gEDA project has developed and continues to work on a comprehensive suite of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, all licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). These tools are utilized for electrical circuit design, schematic capture, simulation, prototyping, and production. Currently, the gEDA project provides a mature collection of free software applications for electronics design that includes features such as schematic capture, attribute management, bill of materials (BOM) generation, netlisting into over 20 different formats, analog and digital simulations, and printed circuit board (PCB) layout.
The gEDA project was initiated due to the scarcity of free EDA tools available for POSIX systems. Its primary goal is to advance the field of open source hardware or free hardware. The suite is primarily developed on the GNU/Linux platform, although efforts are also made to ensure compatibility with other platforms as well.
