Plates and shells (MIT lecture notes)
The deformation of a thin plate is illustrated, showing the displacement, the mid-surface in red, and the normal to the mid-surface in blue.
The Kirchhoff–Love theory of plates is a two-dimensional mathematical model used to determine stresses and deformations in thin plates under forces and moments. This theory builds upon Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and was developed by Love in 1888 based on assumptions proposed by Kirchhoff. The theory assumes that the mid-surface plane can be utilized to represent a three-dimensional plate in two dimensions.
