Since the advent of personal computers, the industry has continually supplied more powerful hardware to meet the demands of software that requires significant processing power. Companies like Intel have upgraded their processors from 8-bit to 16-bit and then to 32-bit systems while also increasing clock speeds from 4.77 MHz up to over 550 MHz. In development are even more advanced 64-bit processors with still higher clock speeds. However, the cost of developing a new processor is so high that only large corporations can afford such upgrades. There may come a point where the law of diminishing returns kicks in, making further development costs outweigh potential improvements.
