The core idea behind CompactFlash (CF) technology is to enable capturing, retaining, and transporting data, audio, and images on CompactFlash Storage Cards. These cards facilitate easy transfer of various digital information and software between a wide range of digital systems. CFA approved the CompactFlash standard as a vendor-independent specification that ensures CF products function correctly and are compatible with future designs. This eliminates compatibility issues for users. Recently, CFA has developed the CF+ specification to expand the original concept beyond flash data storage by including I/O devices and magnetic disk data storage. The new specification covers both Type I (3.3mm thick) cards and newer Type II (5mm thick) cards. While many CompactFlash and I/O devices can fit into a Type I card, the thicker Type II cards allow for higher capacity CompactFlash cards, magnetic disk cards, and additional I/O cards.
