简介:
The Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification was created with the aim of defining widely adopted interfaces, facilitating dependable operating system (OS)-driven configuration and power management for both individual devices and complete systems. ACPI serves as a foundational component within Operating System-directed Configuration and Power Management (OSPM). It represents a significant advancement, integrating and refining earlier power management BIOS code, Advanced Power Management (APM) application programming interfaces (APIs), Plug and Play BIOS (PNPBIOS) APIs, and Multiprocessor Specification (MPS) tables into a meticulously structured power management and configuration interface specification. ACPI offers a systematic pathway for transitioning from older, established hardware to newer ACPI-compatible hardware, while also permitting the coexistence of ACPI and legacy mechanisms within a single machine, allowing their utilization as required. Moreover, the system architectures prevalent during the initial development of ACPI pushed the boundaries of traditional “Plug and Play” interface capabilities. This specification has evolved existing motherboard configuration interfaces to effectively support more sophisticated architectures in a manner that is both more resilient and potentially more efficient. The interfaces and OSPM concepts detailed herein are applicable across a broad spectrum of computer classes, encompassing desktop, mobile, workstation, and server machines. From an energy management standpoint, OSPM/ACPI emphasizes the importance of conserving energy by strategically transitioning inactive devices into reduced power states – including initiating a low-power state or even placing the entire system into sleep mode when feasible. This document comprehensively details ACPI hardware interfaces, ACPI software interfaces, and the associated data structures that, upon implementation, provide robust support for Operating System-directed configuration and power management (OSPM).
