Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is an optical, non-contact technique for measuring full-field displacements and strains. The only requirement is that the test specimen must have a random speckle pattern on its surface, which can be either artificially created by the experimenter or naturally occurring. DIC has no inherent length scale; through appropriate selection of image magnification and speckle size, it can measure displacements ranging from meter to micron scales.
