This function, designated as ellipsefit, employs a robust direct least squares approach to determine the optimal ellipse that best approximates the provided data. Specifically, the function [varargout]=ellipsefit(x,y) identifies the least squares ellipse which provides the most accurate fit to the input data points represented by x and y. It is essential that the input datasets, x and y, contain a minimum of five data points to ensure reliable results. The output variables, Xc and Yc, represent the x- and y-axis centers of the calculated ellipse, respectively. Furthermore, A and B denote the lengths of the major and minor axes of the ellipse, respectively. The variable Phi indicates the angular rotation of the major axis relative to the x-axis, expressed in radians. Finally, P serves as a vector encapsulating all general conic parameters defining the elliptical shape.
